This isn't news, or anything really significant at all. But several people have been nagging me about how the shiny new Lumia phones are pretty far behind in hacking, and there's not much I can do about that. Props to Nokia's team; while the firmware of their devices is notoriously buggy, the security is really quite good. At least from the managed side of things.

Anyway. If you have a Nokia device, can you do me a favor? Follow these steps:

Turn off your phone

Hold down Volume Up and Volume Down. Don't let go until I say so.

Connect your phone to your computer with the USB cable

Keep holding those buttons

It should vibrate with a quick, half second burst. Check your computer and see what device is detected. You can find this in Devices and Printers on Windows 7, in the Device Manager, or just check what device it is trying to install drivers for. If you're on Linux, run lsusb and give me that output.
In the comments, post the device name you see, along with all the information under "More Info" in Settings->About on the phone, the model of the phone (e.g. Nokia 800), and tell me whether or not you've updated your phone with the Nokia Care Suite.
